SINGAPORE: Talks on a free trade agreement (FTA) between the European Union and Singapore are progressing well.

Singapore’s Trade and Industry Ministry said discussions Friday focused on further improving access to each other’s markets for goods and service providers, as well as on strengthening trade rules on issues such as Intellectual Property protection and rules of origin.

Singapore’s Trade and Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang and the European Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht met Friday to take stock of the negotiations.

Both were pleased with the good progress of the negotiations so far and agreed to intensify work on the outstanding issues.

Seven rounds of negotiations have been held since negotiations started in March 2010.

Both Singapore and the EU expect to complete negotiations on the FTA later this year and conclude a comprehensive and high-quality agreement.
