Colombia’s FTA czar presents roadmap for US pact

Colombia’s FTA czar presented Tuesday a roadmap of requisites for the trade pact with the United States to go into effect this year.

Hernando Jose Gomez presented to Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and the Council of Trade Associations, the roadmap with 50 urgent actions for both the public and private sectors during the implementation stage of the U.S.- Colombia free trade agreement.

In an interview with financial publication La Republica Gomez said that in order to make the most of the opportunity presented by the FTA with the U.S., Colombia needs to make adjustments to its regulatory framework and customs procedures.

According to the FTA tzar, Colombia must also coordinate with U.S. authorities to make sure that its agricultural products definitely meet the sanitary and phytosanitary requirements of its northern neighbor.
Gomez also highlighted the management of logistical issues, the infrastructure of the country, the quality of products to be exported, as aspects that need improvement.
