Export flexibility with ROO

The rules of origin (ROO) in the context of Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) provides Fijian exporters the maximum flexibility to export Fijian Made and Fijian Grown products into the European Union.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade revealed this at the National Workshop on Economic Partnership Agreement, Rules of Origin at the Holiday Inn in Suva yesterday.

This workshop was part of the government’s effort to update Fiji’s private sector and other relevant stakeholders on the details of the EU’s EPA proposal on Rules of Origin (cumulation) and to assess the practical implications of the proposal on Fiji’s manufacturing sector.

The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) was one of the first trade agreements that Fiji and indeed the Pacific ACP states would conclude with a developed partner, the EU.

Ministry permanent secretary Shaheen Ali said an important aspect of the EPA was the rules of origin.

"As an analogy, if the EPA is seen as a vehicle of trade and the private sector are the drivers, the rules of origin provides the engine to the vehicle or the trade agreement," Mr Ali said.
