The Office of the Thai Trade Representatives (TTR) is to propose a free trade pact between Thailand and Morocco to open the door for more trade and investment between Thailand and African countries.

Speaking after a trip to Morocco and Egypt, Srirat Rastapan, head of the TTR, said Morocco had expressed interest in signing an FTA with Thailand.

She said Morocco has many good business opportunities for Thai investment in poultry, textiles, jewellery, fisheries and automobile parts with favourable investment conditions and low wages.

She said the stronger trade ties with Morocco were part of a plan to expand trade and investment in new markets in Africa with Morocco and Egypt acting as gateways to North Africa, Nigeria to West Africa and Kenya to East Africa.

The TTR would also propose setting up a commercial office in Morocco to assist Thai businessmen with trade and investment in the country.

She said the FTA proposal would be put to Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to consider before his planned trip to Morocco in September.
