MEXICO CITY, June 26, 2004

The Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) and social organizations of El Salvador urged the Congress to reject the ratification of the free trade agreement (FTA) inked with the United States.

The opposition paid for the publication on Saturday of a letter that includes this petition in the local daily La Prensa Grafica, reports from the capital San Salvador said.

The FMLN, the main opposition party in El Salvador, and the social organizations said that the negotiations on an FTA did not include all the sectors and were anti-democratic, while the accordwill weaken the social obligations in the country.

They said that the FTA signed last May 28 by five Central America countries (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua andCosta Rica) and the United States does not recognize the a symmetries between the economies of the United States and the Latin American countries.

The treaty envisages an indiscriminated opening of the Central American countries while the United States refuses to eliminate the agricultural subsidies that damage the Central American producers, the text said.

The FMLN and the social grouping urged the people of the other Central American nations to prevent the ratification of the FTA, for in their views it will destroy the region’s agriculture.
