India’s Tata To Set Up Truck Plant In Thailand: Thai Official

CHENNAI, Sept 23 Asia Pulse - Tata Motors was in the process of setting up a pick-up truck manufacturing plant in Thailand, from where it could access the ASEAN and the Chinese markets through the Free Trade Area (FTA) treaties, a top Thailand trade representative said here.

Talking to reporters here, Prachuab Chaiyasan, Thai Trade Representative, said the entry of Tatas into Thailand would pave the way for other Indian auto players also to explore manufacturing opportunities in his country.

He said Tatas were in the process of choosing a partner in Thailand.

Thailand would have FTAs with all the ASEAN countries by 2010 and it was also in the process of signing an FTA with China, he said, adding that the Tatas would get maximum benefits by tapping these lucrative markets for its pick-up trucks manufactured from Thailand.

"Thailand is the Detroit of the East," he said, and pointed out that Toyota, Honda and Ford were establishing their R&D centres in his country. The country was also home to a large number of auto-parts manufacturers, he said.

According to a data provided by the officials, a total of eight projects from India have been approved by Thailand’s Board of Investment (BOI) valued at 817.4 million baht (US$19.9 million) during the Jan-June 2005 period. In the same period previous year, the Indian investments approved by the BOI were 155.7 million baht, it said.
