Entrepreneurs, economists trust Free Trade starts in January

9 December 2005

Santo Domingo.- Entrepreneurs and economists trust that the Free Trade Agreement with Central America and the United States (DR-CAFTA) will in effect start as scheduled in January 2006.

Yet, productive sectors cautioned on lengthy delay in the country’s preparedness for the new market scheme.

Verizon’s president Jorge Ivan Ramirez is among the most optimists in the future implementation of the DR-CAFTA.

Notwithstanding this optimism, fears abound with the country’s lagging process to make ready for the trade accord to start on the 1st day of the upcoming year 2006, as has been indicated by Big Business Council (Conep), Elena Villeya.

The small and medium-level business sector is not as concerned. William Calderon, president of the association that groups these lesser entrepreneurs considers that the trade accord will entail multiple business opportunities.
