US envoy addresses Qatari businessmen

DOHA • The US ambassador to Qatar, Chase Untermeyer, has said he hoped that Qatar follows into the footsteps of its GCC neighbours and concludes a free trade agreement (FTA) with his country.

He was addressing the members of the Qatar Businessmen Association (QBA) at the Association’s premises here yesterday.

Untermeyer while underlining the significance of the flow investment from Qatar into the US and vice versa, remarked: "I hope that Qatar soon signs an FTA deal with the US as its GCC neighbours have done."

The envoy said that an FTA agreement would enhance economic cooperation between their two countries.

Present at the meet was Sheikh Faisal bin Qassem Al Thani, chairman of QBA, and other officials, prominent among them being Sheikh Nawaf bin Nasser Al Thani.

QBA officials while welcoming Untermeyer called for the setting up of a joint Qatari-US business association, particularly consisting of representatives from the small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

QBA officials said it will soon forward its recommendations regarding the proposed joint forum of SME businessmen to the authorities concerned in their two countries.

The forum would discuss issues of mutual interest and think of ways to bolster relations between the private sectors in the US and Qatar. The QBA hoped that Untermeyer would soon pay another visit to their head office.
