Anti-FTA Rally Shakes Lima

29 June 2006

Lima, Jun 29 (Prensa Latina) Thousands of Peruvians made Lima shudder with a rally against the congressional ratification Thursday morning of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the US.

During Wednesday’s protest, over 2,000 participants called traitors the 79 parliamentarians that had backed the measure.

The march also represented a clear warning to president-elect Alan Garcia, of the Peruvian Aprista Party, to fulfill his electoral promise of reviewing the FTA if the current Congress passes it.

Antolin Huascar, head of the National Coordinator of Anti-FTA Fight, ratified they will begin a national agrarian strike on July 4, warning that any violent act during the protests will be considered complete responsibility of the government.

Yesterday, the Peruvian Congress began debating the Peru-US Trade Promotion Agreement, sealed April 12 in Washington and with reports of the parliamentarian commissions for Foreign Trade and Foreign Affairs.

Previously, four bills were approved to guarantee compensations for national agriculture and set a legal base to enable the ratification of the FTA in both chambers of the US Congress.
