Uruguay FM against FTA with US

11 August 2006

Montevideo, Aug 11 (Prensa Latina) Uruguayan Foreign Minister Reinaldo Gargano ratified Friday his rejection of signing of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the US.

Gargano s statement came after President Tabare Vazquez expressed willingness to advance in FTA negotiations with Washington, saying they were fundamental for the national economy.

Supporting the president are ministers, Danilo Astori, Economy, and Jorge Lepra, Energy and Mining.

However, Gargano insists he is doing the best for Uruguay to spurn such a trade deal with the White House.

Concerning the FTA benefits for trade between both nations, he wondered about the relation among trade, patents and State purchases while recalling what has happened in other nations.

"I continue working for a better Common Market of the South," Gargano stressed, reminding that FTA s jeopardize relations among the bloc s partners.
