Japan, Mexico Near FTA

(DTN) — Japan and Mexico have completed final details of their bilateral free trade agreement, paving the way for its implementation as early as next April, a senior Japanese government official said.

A formal announcement of the bilateral FTA will be made jointly by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and Mexican President Vicente Fox when Koizumi visits Mexico and signs the agreement in late September.

The Japan-Mexico FTA was to be signed in November 2003 when Fox visited Japan, but it was not finalized because of Mexico’s demand for quota increases for pork, citrus products, and other farm produce, as well as Japan’s demand for progressive lowering of import tariffs on steel, autos, and other products.
