The U.S.: More is needed for Dominican Republic’s entry into Free Trade

26 September 2006

Santo Domingo.- According to United States ambassador Hans Hertell, the country loses enormous development opportunities with delays in entering the free trade agreement denominated DR-CAFTA.

The U.S. diplomat affirmed that no date has been set for implementing the accord signed between the Dominican Republic, the United States and Central America, a situation which, in his view, is cause for grave concern.

He stated that, in order for the trade agreement to be implemented, a group of bills is still pending approval by the National Congress. Of the pending items, the U.S. government has not identified any as impediment for going forth with the treaty.

Hertell lamented that various dates have been announced, to later be postponed.
