Anti-FTA Groups Denied State Subsidies

The government will stop providing financial support to civic groups openly opposing the proposed free trade agreement (FTA) between South Korea and the United States, the Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs said yesterday.

The ministry recently ordered the country’s 16 municipal governments to cut state subsidies to civic groups engaged in antiglobalization demonstrations and other activities that call for the government to abort talks with the U.S. over the free trade accord. Civic groups, including the Korean Alliance Against the Korea-U.S. FTA, a coalition of about 300 civic groups, trade unions and political parties, criticized the government’s decision to cut the subsidies.
