Maqbool to attend Oman-US trade and investment meeting

MUSCAT - Maqbool bin Ali Sultan, minister of commerce and industry, will lead the Sultanate’s delegation to the first meeting of the Omani-American Council for Trade and Investment scheduled to be held in Washington today. In the two-day meeting, a number of bilateral issues will be discussed and the Omani delegation will review the Sultanate’s regulations governing trade and investment and its privatisation efforts. The Americans will provide a brief on trade promotion authority.

The two sides will discuss banking, insurance and telecommunications services, customs tariffs, rules of country of origin applied in the two countries, issues of labour and environment, government purchases and intellectual property rights protection.

The Omani officials will also confer with American businessmen and congressmen. The delegation will include representatives of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Foreign Ministry, Ministry of Regional Municipalities, Environment and Water Resources, Ministry of Manpower, Royal Oman Police (Customs Public Administration), Central Bank of Oman, Telecommunica-tions Regulatory Authority, Tender Board, the Oman Centre for Investment Promo-tion and Export Development (Ociped) and the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry. A framework agreement on trade and investment signed in Washington last July provided for establishing the council. The agreement offers the opportunity to explore expanding exchange of trade and investment and is seen as a step towards signing a free trade pact between the two countries. - ONA
