Peru’s Garcia: 7% increase in economy not enough, promotes FTA with China

12 March 2007

(LIP-jl) — Recent news that informed of a 7% increase in Peru’s economy was not to the liking of Peruvian President Alan Garcia.

"Considering Peru’s economic expansion potential, 7% is simply not enough," affirmed Peru’s leader.

Garcia made this comment while at a ceremony that named 500 Peruvian citizens living abroad, honorary Peruvian trade ambassadors in their host countries.

"Our potential is much greater than 7%. Our economy is heading in the right direction and I firmly believe we will experience greater increases in the future," declared Garcia.

Additionally, the Peruvian head of state indicated that a possible free trade agreement with China should not instill fear in the Peruvian economy.

"Those who believe a free trade agreement with China is bad for the country have serious issues," states Garcia.

Preliminary feasibility studies are currently in the works for Peruvian and Chinese officials who expect to begin trade negotiation as early as November.
