Guatemala: Apparel Sourcing Show to assess CAFTA-DR

23 March 2007

This year’s Apparel Sourcing Show in Guatemala City offers delegates the chance to take stock of the first full year of the US-Central America and Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR).

The trade show, which takes place from 17-19 April, targets the textile and apparel industry in the Central American and Caribbean region, and will highlight the new opportunities and challenges brought by the now-implemented trade deal.

El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua already have CAFTA benefits in place, the Dominican Republic joined earlier this month (1 March) and Costa Rica’s entry is due to come into force later this year.

The Apparel Sourcing Show features international exhibitors, a matchmaking programme that brings apparel manufacturers face-to-face with US buyers, and academic seminars delivering updates on the latest news and information affecting the industry.

In addition to CAFTA-DR, seminar topics will include the latest fashion and retail trends, and the impact of changes in the political landscape due to recent (the US and Nicaragua) and upcoming (Guatemala) elections.

Analysis of current US import data by International Development Systems shows that all six of the CAFTA-DR countries rank among the top 25 suppliers of apparel.

Additionally, in 2006, approximately 70% of the apparel imported from the region entered the US market duty-free under either the new Free Trade Agreement (FTA) or the previous preference programme (CBTPA).

Additional information - including online registration and materials for interested exhibitors - is available at the Apparel Sourcing Show website.
