South Korea seeking trade agreement with Mercosur

BUENOS AIRES, Sept. 28 (Xinhuanet) — South Korean President Roh Moo-Hyun will meet with Latin American leaders next months to seeka free trade agreement, local press reported Tuesday.

The South Korean leader will travel to Argentina weeks before his participation in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC), which is to be held in Santiago, Chile.

President Roh will put forth a free trade agreement between hiscountry and the Common Market of the South (Mercosur) on orange, beef and poultry, said Argentine Ambassador to South Korea Rodolfo Rodriguez.

Mercosur groups Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.

Although there is still no "definite date" on the issue, both sides have a political will to move forward with the negotiations,said Rodriguez.

The ambassador pointed out that Roh will also come up with "proposals for the development of information technology, software,biotechnology and nuclear energy."

With respect to beef trade, the greatest concern of South Koreais to ascertain Argentina is free of the foot-and-mouth disease, he added.

An expert team from South Korea will conduct a thorough assessment weeks before Roh’s visit.
