Taiwan to sign free trade pact with El Salvador, Honduras

4 May 2007

Taipei - Taiwan’s economics minister will fly to El Salvador Saturday to sign a free trade agreement (FTA) with El Salvador and Honduras, making them the fifth and sixth countries to sign an FTA with Taipei, the Economics Ministry said on Friday.

Chen Ruey-long will sign the Taiwan-El Salvador-Honduras FTA. It will be Taiwan’s fourth FTA with foreign countries following the FTA deals with Panama, Guatemala and Nicaragua. It will be Taiwan’s first trilateral FTA, the ministry said.

Taiwan is holding FTA talks with the Dominican Republic, which like Panama, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Honduras, is among the 25 countries that have diplomatic ties with Taipei.

Taiwan is also seeking to sign FTA deals with countries that do not recognize Taipei, like the United States, Japan, South Korea Singapore and Chile But they are reluctant to do so for fear of angering China, which sees Taiwan as its breakaway province.
