Kibaki to Visit Libya

4 June 2007

Nairobi - President Mwai Kibaki will leave today for a three-day official visit to Libya.

The President’s visit is geared towards consolidating the growing ties between Kenya and Libya.

As the latest entrant into the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), Libya is a potential trade partner not only for Kenya but the COMESA regional economic bloc which President Kibaki is currently the chairman.

The visit is also a follow-up to the Memorandum of Understanding, which the Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Energy signed early this year with the Tamoil Holdings Limited, the National Oil Corporation of Libya.

During the visit, President Kibaki and his host President Muammar Gaddafi will also discuss ways of fast tracking the establishment of a Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation and also the signing of the Kenya/Libya Bilateral Air Services Agreement among other issues of common interest between the two countries.

The plane carrying the President and his delegation will depart Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 9:30 am.
