Bolivia for Sovereignty in EU Talks

La Paz, Sep 17 2007 (Prensa Latina) — The Bolivian Deputy Minister of Economic Relations and Foreign Trade Pablo Guzman said that his country will demand sovereignty of natural resources, public services and intellectual property in its negotiations with the European Union (EU).

Talking about the new negotiation table between the EU and the Andean Community of Nations (CAN) that will be established on Monday in Bogota, Colombia, the official said that the document of 14 aspects was shaped by delegations from Bolivia, Peru, Colombia and Ecuador.

The text contained general objectives including access to markets and the need to overcome the differences between EU, CAN and the four Andean countries.

Bolivia also ratified its rejection of the neoliberal Free Trade Treaty (FTT) boosted by United States and the European Union in the region, added the Vice Minister.

Last August, the Bolivian Government presented the so-called Association Agreement CAN-EU to social organization leaders, businessmen and legislators.

Pablo Solon, ambassador in charge of trade, explained to Prensa Latina that the decision of starting talks between those blocs means the Andean countries must agree to recognize the different levels of development and economic approach.

CAN General Secretary Freddy Ehlers said that the agreement is historically important for the future of the integration and the relations of the bloc with the old continent.
