CAFTA A Danger Says Nobel Prize Winner

San Jose, Sep 24 (Prensa Latina) — Nobel Peace Prize winner Argentine Adolfo Perez Esquivel (1980) called on Costa Ricans Monday to reject the free trade agreement with the United States or submit themselves to the US market.

"Slaves are not able to negotiate, but rather forced to yield: only free countries are entitled to negotiate," declared Perez Esquivel regarding the October 7 referendum to decide whether Costa Rica signs the Central America-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement with the US.

He denied that rejecting free trade agreements with the US or EU was refusing to trade, rather demanding negotiations on an equal footing.

Latin America will only achieve this equity by joining regional markets, including MERCOSUR or the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas, he stressed.

He said that the Costa Rican decision in this regard will have an impact on all of Latin America.
