US eyes bilateral investment treaty with Vietnam: ambassador

The US aims to ink a bilateral investment treaty with Vietnam, according to the US ambassador.

At a press briefing Friday, US Ambassador to Vietnam Michael Michalak said such a treaty would help bolster Vietnam’s global competitiveness. He added that he would step up efforts to encourage more US firms to do business in Vietnam.

He also said he would do his best to help Vietnam improve its investment environment, noting that a transparent legal system has always been a top priority of US businesses.

In reaffirming the US’s support of Vietnam’s education sector, Michalak said he would hold a meeting in the near future to discuss ideas on how to improve its private and secondary education.

He also promised to dispatch US consulate officials to Vietnamese colleges to supply students with complete visa information. Since taking office on August 10, Michalak has stated as a goal doubling the amount of US scholarships granted to Vietnamese students.

He did not reveal the US’s stance on Vietnam’s bid for non-permanent membership on the United Nations Security Council, but did pledge that if the move comes to fruition, the US would help Vietnam play a constructive role in the UN.

Michalak applauded Vietnam’s rapid economic growth and its open and consistent foreign policies.
