India, West Africa to tighten bilateral ties

Ha Noi (VNA) — India decided on October 16 to extend a line of credit of 250 million USD and 100 million USD worth of agricultural and industrial supplying for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

In a move to renew its cooperative partnership with Africa, India has also decided to increase the number of scholarships for Nigerian students to study in India from 50 to 75, according to the Press Trust of India (PTI).

The decisions came following talks between visiting Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Nigerian President Yar’Adua on October 15.

After the talks, India and Nigeria issued a joint declaration on strategic partnership that covers a wide range of areas of cooperation from security, trade and economy to education, science and technology.

The two sides also signed a Memorandum of Understanding on defence cooperation and three other documents on foreign affairs consultation and cooperation.

It was agreed that the two countries would sign within the next six months an extradition treaty, agreements on double taxation avoidance and bilateral investment promotion and protection.

Also in the declaration, India and Nigeria agreed to enhance mutually beneficial trade and investment exchanges with each other in sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, food processing, small and medium enterprises, power generation, fertilisers, information and communication technology, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, auto-components and other sectors.
