Thanks Michael Omondi for a well researched article about the dilemma that Kenya faces as she struggles to improve her economy. Yes removal from the list of least developed countries will mean no exemptions from taxes when exporting her goods. What is needing double attention is the influx of traders whose main concern is making profit. When the Transnational corporations flood in, and because of their financial backing, their background and their attitude to Kenyans and the attitude of Kenyans to outsiders (colonial legacy and education system that trains people for submission), the powerful corporations can overrun the country. The question is how to strengthen the Kenyans in every level, as employees they need to know how to negotiate and gain , as policy makers they need to know who can be allowed in and so on. Any ideas of how to empower Kenyans? Remaining in the list of less developed countries should also have a time limit.

The World Trade Organization has also a hint to fall with this falling economy. Bush administration had done several alternatives to save the falling economy but it’s all the same. Now, can Obama’s administration make it? Could he bring the great change in the country? Well, hopefully, he can do it. Conversely, some lawmakers and church officials in the Canadian province of British Columbia have banded together to try and stop lenders of payday loans from operating, by lobbying for payday loan regulations and interest rate caps, similarly in the United States. Still, it looks worse for lenders of payday loans than it does for the guys on Wall Street that created this mess. The interest rate caps of 36% or below typically make the business unprofitable and some things to consider are the loss of payday loan companies creates more unemployment and driving out industry is just a poor idea during a recession anyway.

Banks do have an impact to the economy, and likewise, economy has also an impact to bank industry. Debt of the country won’t lessen if more and more people are craving for financial help that it’s hard for the government to finance it. Thus, it has the tendency to borrow money from other country. In an economic recession, the ability to conduct your financial affairs correctly is of greater importance. The modern world dictates that you have to deal with banks, and that you will eventually have some sort of personal loans that you’re paying off, be it for an education, a car, a home, or cash advances to pay off a sudden expense. Learning the art of personal finance so that you perhaps don’t ever need cash advances is the goal that many people are working towards. If you aren’t afflicted by layoffs, your credit is probably now restricted through normal channels.

I fully agree with Devinder. Many developing countries including Nepal are not and will not be of exception of such incidences. One thing I never understood is that why our government opt reactive measures once someone external knocks and or steps in their doorsteps. As Devinder has rightly pointed out, developing countries yet to identify, recognise and value enormous potential of biodiversity and associated traditional knowledge & practices, which does not possess only crop, food or medicinal value but to a large extent have the cultural importance, economic prospects, enviornmental services and political meaning. I hope, this kind of debate, knowledge sharing and solidarity from across the globe might help government to think and be proactive.

Once again, Hoffa and his cronies are pushing their protectionist agenda with lies and misinformation not backed up by facts.
The facts are that in the 17 months the Mexican Cross Border Demonstration Projects has been operational, Mexican carriers have made more than 2,000 ventures into the United States with ZERO ACCIDENTS and ZERO SAFETY INCIDENTS.
Mandatory inspections of these trucks as they cross the border, coupled with increased scrutiny of cross border drayage trucks from Mexico have shown that the Mexican carriers have a far better safety rating than American and Canadian trucks.
At the same time, the presence of 100 Mexican trucks belonging to 27 fully qualified Mexican carriers has had no detrimental effect on American trucking nor has it cost any Americans jobs in the transportation sector.
Hoffa and others fail to recognize that since the 1982 moratorium on foreign trucks, there were more than 1000 Mexican carriers who were grandfathered in, many of whom continue to operate safely and in compliance to this date.
Furthermore, removing funding for this program will not rid American highways of Mexican trucks as many of those in the program have positioned themselves to continue US operations through establishment of "sister" companies in the US.
Once again, Hoffa mouths off about "Dangerous Mexican Trucks" when the evidence is contrary to his words. His union companies such as YRC have much worse safety records, equipment and drivers than what Mexico is allowing to operate inside the US.
This is a subject that I have researched extensively and am considered an expert in.

There are many such EPAs either in operation or in negotiation between various countries and regions. There seems to be a general opposition to EPAs because the needs of one country/region is being served more than that of the partnering country/region.
Although, I am not supporting the EU’s motivation behind such an agreement, I also see fault with African leaders, who only seem to look at the short-term benefits of such arrangements. Let us not deny the level of corruption and lack of education of the African leaders. I am African myself and admitting that our leaders are not interested in anyone’s welfare but their own, is painful. Yes, there are many debates and even jokes that politicians never act in the interest of the state, but that’s another story.
I feel that Africa’s dealings in the past with respect to foreign investment and international aid (i.e. misuse of incoming money) has given the developed countries the impetus to assert positions (in such agreements) in which they have the upper hand. By this I mean, they see that the countries into which they are pumping in their money and resources is not interested in helping themselves, so they lose interest in maintaining long term relations with the country - they look to make money and leave.
Although this article rightly points out the inequality in the proposed EPA, it should also have mentioned, the non-willingness of political leaders to address the African peoples’ interests. I think this article’s main aim is to make the common people aware of the reality of these agreements (a good thing). It might hit home with people in the more advanced countries and maybe they will band together, oppose such deals and lobby against their governments. But what will the African people do? In a continent where tribal mentality is visible at federal level politics, what hope have the people got to change things?
One thing is very clear, the African leaders are NOT representatives of the African people and it would seem (very very unfortunately), that nobody has the power to change that.

This article ignores an incredible number of facts. The U.S. had very low tariffs or other barriers against Singapore manufactures to begin with, the FTA did little to encourage any U.S. company to move production to Singapore. Standards of living and environmental protections are at least as high in Singapore as in the U.S. The U.S. has a $13 billion trade surplus with Singapore, and growing. If you want to choose an agreement to rail against free trade, the Singapore FTA is the wrong one.

Minister Wehby plans to acheive all of thie above, while HASTILY and seeminly trying to destroy the national airline. Rushing to meet a divestment deadline without the basic principles and procedures in place. Contrary to what he puts out to the Jamaican dispora, the day to day business of the ailine in not ready for a divestment process.. Schedule in shambles, day to day ways of generating and saving capitol not in place and deligently trying to achieve, marketing of airline to be desired ,running with a lack of imagination and continuosly ignoring great avenues of potential income. Does the minister realize that a national airline will be vital to his above mentioned plans?????

It’s very interesting to discuss whether India has been able to attain the long-term objective of achieving free trade goal with EU, with augmenting the production and full employment. The attainment of equality and social justic for the poor and the downtrodden in India would be possible through FTA between India and the EU. As India has become one of the fastest developing economies of the world, it is highly possible for India to achieve a constant and continuous economic growth. Hence, the most difficult challenge to innovate new aavenues in this direction is not how to generate a lot of new ideas but to manage the resources required to fulfill these ideas.
