The churches’ concern is rather ambigous. How can they claim that they do not have enough information and understanding on EPAs when the negotiations started 5 years ago? Who is to blame? Is it the EU, the ACP Governments o the lack of proactiveness by the NGOs? If they really need more information the best way is to engage with the Ministries of Trade in their respective countries. They also assert that the negotiation process has not been inclusive because it has sidelined citizens and their representatives. Do they expect a millon citizens to sit at the negotiation table with the EU? In many countries that I know of (Malawi, Kenya, Zambia etc) Governments have consulted widely with stakeholders such as the private sector (who are the actual exporters, unlike churches) and their views have largely been taken on board. In many countries the various technical working groups include representatives from the private sector as well as NGOs.
The suggestion of shifting the deadline maybe plausible but it is problematic because ACP Governments are not in control. on 31st December, 2007 the Cotonou waiver expires which means the discriminatory preferences enjoyed by ACP countries will become illegal after that date. The preferences will be subject to challenges in the WTO, unless either (a) a regime compatible with WTO law is in place, i.e. the EPA or (b) another waiver is sought to extend the preferences. The catch is that it is the EU that must seek the waiver, not ACP states. The ACP may request the EU to act but cannot ensure that it does so. At the same time, if the EU doesn’t act, it is ACP countries that will be hurt. If it does act, thank God.
Does the EU really have the motivation to act? I don’t think so. Afterall, with EU’s enlargment to 27 countries, of which only 9 had colonial ties with ACP (and therefore would want to ’feel for us’) the benefactor attitude no longer holds.

Por ser el tema del TLC tan amplio, se presta a malas interpretaciones.
El articulo esta muy intresante, pues me mostro una perspectiva mas abierta en cuanto al pensamiento de los estudiantes de la UCR. La verdad desde adentro de la universidad se debe ver como si ustedes los estudiantes de esta estuvieran defendiendo a su pais contra los invasores, (semi-heroes de la patria). Lamento decir que desde afuera las cosas se ven muy diferentes... tal vez la causa sea mas que justa, pero no tienen un planeamiento de como proyectar favorablemente esa imagen. Aunque ustedes digan que no son influenciados por sus maestros creo que es mas que evidentela influencia que ejercen ellos sobre ustedes...
Pensar en el futuro es pensar en alianzas comerciales, no se puede estar aislado del mundo... no pretendan influir en los ciudadanos costarricenses con ideas izquierdistas mandadas a recoger que no forman parte del avance mundial.
por ultimo quisiera dejar claro que los ricos si tienen mucho por perder , por que el que no tiene nada que va a perder .
Quisiera felicitarlos por su constancia, valor absolutamente admirable...

Mr Daley is a long-term resident of Kyrgyzstan and since April 2006 has been leading the negotiations with the Kyrgyz Government on behalf of Oxus with regard to the Jerooy Gold Project.
Mr Daley knows the Kyrgyz Republic and its people very well. He has developed good relationships with Government officials and is a well respected member of the business community in Bishkek. Mr Daley is currently in a stable condition in hospital. ONE YEAR ON: NO DIVIDENDS FOR DALEY
Today 6th July 2007 is exactly one year to the day on the assassination attempt on Oxus Chief Negotiator Sean Daley.
Four bullets were fired at Sean Daley with one bullet penetrating into his lower back.
Daleys’ right kidney was destroyed and removed. After life saving surgery, the bullet today remains deep in his liver. Mr Daley spent months in hospital and now one year later is still under medical supervision.
Not one of Oxus Directors visited their Chief Representative over the many months he remained in intensive care in Hospital or even visit his immediate family, wife or children to offer support..................................................

Yo creo que para Guatemala es importante que se realice un TLC con Colombia, especialmente para un desarrollo industrial en Guatemala.
Colombia, tiene mucha industria, especialmente en los metales, plástico, petróleo, etc. Es un país muy industrializado y sobre todo es un país hermano (así lo veo yo), y juntos podemos desarrollar empresas y exportar al resto del mundo.
Por que digo esto..., bueno, lo digo por que tenemos (ambos) muchos recursos naturales y la necesidad de desarrollo en Guatemala es de urgencia. Guatemala tiene recursos y Colombia tiene la tecnología, y somos países hermanos.

You don’t have the slightest idea what has been impoverishing afrocolombians for decades: corrpution, that now has been stopped by succesfull government investigations. Some time ago, a huge scandal regarding food for babies given to pigs, put more than 12 black Colombian politicians in jail. And it had been going on for years. But now not anymore. I go to Colombia frequently, and I have not read (as my good Spanish allows it) that afrocolombians are opposing a FTA with the United States. The only ones opposing a FTA are the friends of Chávez’s rethorical socialism. There can’t be social equity with a war going on. I don’t think that’s what 90% of afrocolombians think, and you assume that they are thinking it.

Independientemente de la verborragia fatua con la que unas decenas de costarricenses de sangre paria pretenden infundir miedo a un pueblo que tiene todo para ser grande, para crecer y para seguir siendo esa luminaria que discrepa entre la triste uniformidad socioeconómica latinoamericana; el mismo pueblo tiene ahora la oportunidad de, finalmente, sacudirse del vil aletargamiento al que ha sido sometido por gobiernos incompetentes y catervas de terroristas ideológicos abanderados como sindicatos de trabajadores, que irónicamente, representan una ínfima parte de las personas que realmente trabajan y hacen grande a este país.
Vergüenza deberían tener aquellos que acusan sin darse con un canto en los dientes, cansados estamos los costarricenses de las incoherencias de los que callan lo que les conviene, parafraseando una buena expresión que un compatriota publicara recientemente en La Nación. ¿O es que el diputado Merino esperaba aclarar más tarde que, en caso que las instituciones nacionales se hubieran prestado a este gatuperio sin sentido, la recolección de firmas en ocho meses nos haría perder la oportunidad de aprobar este tratado comercial, y que todo el proceso de referéndum sería en vano aunque los costarricenses queramos votarlo?
¿Estaría el diputado Merino revelándonos en otra encendida columna, que él mismo estuvo ayudando a cercenarnos el derecho a nosotros, los ciudadanos que si hemos nacido en esta patria, a decidir nuestro propio destino? ¿Confesaría que todo este trajín patético que se está montando con portes ideológicos de los años 70 esta maquiavélicamente diseñado para que nunca podamos tomar esta decisión, hasta que ya sea demasiado tarde, que perdamos el tiempo con perjuros que pretenden mantener el statu quo de los infieles a la patria que se alimentan de la sangre de nosotros los costarricenses? ¿Diría abiertamente el diputado Merino de donde provienen los fondos de las millonarias campañas para el NO, nos puede asegurar que no provienen de “gobiernos extranjeros”, ni de grupos de presión para que el referendo sea negativo? ¿Estaría el y los de su calaña, dispuestos a dar un paso a un lado y esperar en la banca junto con el grupo “Por Costa Rica“? No lo creo, no creo que el diputado Merino estaría anuente a hacer ninguna de las acciones de la lista, al igual que no creo que siga promulgando que este tratado atenta contra nuestra Carta Magna, cuando la Sala Constitucional claramente indicó que está equivocado. Evidenciando otra de las muchas mentiras que se han dicho para confundir al pueblo.
Por favor, dejen de entorpecer el desarrollo. El pueblo aparte de soberano, tiende a ser sabio, de ahí la máxima popular que dice “lo que no sirve que no estorbe”. Al final Costa Rica tendrá la razón y tanto Merino como el séquito de sindicalistas que ven amenazado su modus vivendi verán como un pueblo libre, soberano, valiente y viril se levantará en un ¡SI! apabullante que no permitirá nuestra gloria manchar.

Me imagino que usted tendrá una empresa exportadora, una mina de oro en proceso, me imagino que usted forma parte del pequeño % de la población adinerada de este pais, por eso se encuentra a favor de tal situación. Y claro que la religión se puede convertir en el opio de los pueblos cuando las personas se hacen fanaticas, me imagino que sos ateo, como nuestro querido presidente, que no se lo dijo al Papa cuando fue a besarle la mano al Vaticano...Porque de lo contrario se interesaría por el projimo, la familia, los valores, pero aparentemente como a muchos solo les interesa el dinero, que no digo que no hace falta pero tambien llega a convertirse en el opio de las personas...suerte con tu vida.... ah y Marx se convirtió también en un opio para millones de personas y las llevo a la MUERTE, valiente ejemplo fuiste a poner!!!!

Soy estudiante de Relaciones Laborales y buscando el Marco acuerdo de las Empresas Públicas, me encuentro con esta notable página, la cual me hace reflexionar sobre el acierto en la elección de ésta carrera; de no tomar participación en todo cuanto nos acontece ¿que va a ser del futuro de nuestros hijos?..
Se necesita más difusión sobre todo lo que nos está sucediendo y de lo cual ignoramos una oscura contraparte que en poco tiempo va a comenzar actuar y que sin darnos cuenta devorará nuestros derechos, recursos y todo por lo que se ha venido luchando.

The Koreans imported 700,000 vehicles into the US in 2006. If we assume an average price of $10K ; a 2% tarriff puts $1.4B in federal tax coffers. How is that revenue going to be replaced?
Did Bush put any thought into this lost revenue? Where will this money go? -To the wealthy owners of KIA and Hyundai dealerships. I’m sure they contribute heavily to the RNC.
The US marketplace is one of the largest and lucrative in the world -once in, barriers are non-existent. Trillions of dollars worth of goods are bought and sold each year. Why do we negotiate lousy trade deals with such weak handed players as the Koreans(is the S.Korean market worth an $11B trade deficit?) What about the US industries that get hurt by these lousy deals? Ross Perot had it right -let’s keep the deals in-place just swap places at the table.
How about let’s balance trade with Korea (and the rest of the world) dollar-for-dollar.

Hu once again stressed the importance of implementing the scientific concept of development, promoting social harmony and building an overall well-off society, ahead of the 17th national congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) later this year.
Scientific development,um! But without open debates, it is hard to be scientific even if it can be.
Hu’s outdated philosophy is far different from those of most Chinese. He thinks this is a scientific phenomenon?!
He,however, is only bluffing.Never be serious about it!

Es cierto, escribo de Lima peru, hace dias q me estoy dando cuenta q las noticias estan muy makilladas, el diario 3lc0m3rcio no pone nada de cosas de chavez ni de venezuela ( me entero por la pagina de la BBC en español) , nada de las maravillas de montar muchas fabricas y todo eso q lo considero conveniente, este pais es minero y hariamos las mismas maravillas q el sr chavez aki pero veo q hay muchos lobbies, kiero q peru sea como venezuela !!!
venezuela con petroleo peru bolivia y chile con minerales argentina y brasil con con lo suyo, hariamos una super potencia mundial !!!!!
