Thailand agrees to sign deal on more services

By Piyarat Nisangkard

BANGKOK, July 8 (Bernama) — The Thai military junta has given the green light for the country to sign an agreement on the services sector among Asean members in another 24 services, as well as to sign the Asean-India Free Trade Agreement on the services sector during the upcoming Asean Economic Ministers meeting in Myanmar on Aug 24-26.

The permanent secretary of the Commerce Ministry, Chutima Bunyapraphasara, said the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) today approved the signing of the agreement on the services sector in another 24 services out of a total of 126 services.

Asean members have already signed the agreement on 80 services.

Thailand also will sign the Asean-India FTA on 80 services businesses during the meeting, which would enable businesses from India to hold a 49 per cent stake in the services sector in Thailand, such as pharmaceutical wholesale distribution, graduate education, tourism and research.
