European Parliament to pass resolution supporting Taiwan’s cause

6 May 2011

The European Parliament is scheduled to pass a resolution on May 11 to support Taiwan’s cause. The resolution will push for the signing of a comprehensive agreement to enhance trade and economic cooperation between Taiwan and the European Union.

According to the European Parliament, the resolution will call for strengthening of Taiwan-EU economic ties. That includes the signing of a Taiwan-EU trade pact similar to a free trade agreement.

The resolution will also reaffirm the parliament’s support for Taiwan’s bid for observer status in international organizations. Some of those organizations include the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the International Civil Aviation Organization.

Meanwhile, the European Parliament said Taiwan’s inclusion in the EU’s visa-waiver program has contributed to the promotion of trade and investment between the EU and Taiwan.
