Poll predicts Costa Ricans will vote against free trade agreement with U.S., Central America

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica: Costa Ricans are poised to reject the U.S.-Central American free trade agreement in a referendum Sunday, according to a poll published Thursday.

Costa Rica is the only Central American country that hasn’t joined the free trade agreement, which also includes the Dominican Republic. With Costa Ricans deeply divided over the accord, the government scheduled a referendum on Sunday to decide its future.

The polling company Unimer found that 55 percent of those polled said they opposed the agreement, while 43 percent supported it, the newspaper La Nacion reported. The poll had a margin of error of 3.5 percent, and questioned 1,202 people between Sept. 27 and Oct. 2.

Earlier polls have also predicted defeat.

A minimum of 40 percent of Costa Rica’s 2.6 million voters must participate for the poll to be valid.
