Tavola eyed for diplomatic job

27 March 2007

Ousted foreign affairs minister Kaliopate Tavola could be called to lead the Pacific’s Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) talks with the European Union.

The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat confirmed Mr Tavola is being earmarked for the post and added that his diplomatic expertise would be valuable during negotiations. According to a PACNEWS report, Forum Secretariat secretary general Greg Urwin said Mr Tavola’s knowledge of diplomatic work was vast and if appointed to the position his contribution would be most welcome.

"He is a man who has a great deal of expertise in this area and we would be keen to draw on it," Mr Urwin said.

"It would just be a question of seeing where he might fit in the general structure of the negotiations.

"A man of his experience is someone I think the region would want to call upon on a range of issues."

Mr Tavola works as a consultant with the Forum.
