12 January 2006
Santo Domingo.- United States Under-Secretary for the Western Hemisphere Patrick Duddy affirmed last night while visiting the Congress that the Free Trade Agreement will be greatly beneficial to the Dominican Republic and other co-signing countries.
He set as an example the bilateral agreement with Chile, explaining that this country during the first year widened considerably its commercial relations and benefits.
As to the Haitian situation, he said that the United States work jointly with the international community, so that Haiti can hold free elections, restore democracy and improve the economic and social situation.
Duddy expressed optimism that elections will be held to restore democratic rule.
Duddy visited the Senate and Chamber of Deputies presidents accompanied by US ambassador Hans Hertell.
