US Like Iron over FTA with Colombia

Bogota, Feb 21 (Prensa Latina) The US inflexibility over Colombia’s most sensitive issues characterizes Tuesday the resumption of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) talks, which could be the last round between the two nations.

After recessing over the weekend, both nations’ negotiators will continue today in Washington debates on this agreement, to try to concluded it before February 24.

However, during the break the American response was expected, and not given, to the Colombian proposal over conditioning corn imports on the purchase of domestic crops, the establishment of a safeguard as well an initiative over chicken and other products vital for the Andean state.

Local analysts coincide this shows that neither the presence of President Alvaro Uribe nor his close ties with Washington has relaxed the US position on FTA negotiations.
