Costa Rican Sectors Battle US Trade

San Jose, Oct 16 2006 (Prensa Latina) — The withdrawal of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United States, and development of alternatives are some of the actions proposed by deputies, social organizations and sectors that oppose to the ratification of that agreement on Monday.

Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) union leader, Fabio Chavez, Monday called upon all forces to celebrate on October 23 -24 a national strike against the FTA.

He pointed out that all institutional areas are closed, so there are only public places to hold protests.

Other actions planned to be carried out by FTA opponents is the reactivation of their Parliamentary front.

According to Chavez, the only one way of convincing other sectors and political, social, organized and not organized forces, is by showing the real face of FTA.
