Costa Ricans Oppose FTA

San Jose, Oct 3 2007 (Prensa Latina) — Four days before a referendum, most Costa Rican oppose the Free Trade Agreement with the United States, according to a survey published on Wednesday.

The poll, carried out by the company Demoscopia for the newspaper Al Dia, shows that 50.8 percent of voters oppose the FTA, while 49.2 percent favor the agreement.

Although the difference does not exceed the error margin, so it is considered a technical tie, the number of people who reject the FTA continues to increase and is lightly higher than those who favor the accord.

In February, when the first poll on the FTA was carried out, opinions in favor of the agreement were 10 percent higher than those against it. That difference increased to 21 percent in June.

From then on, the gap between the two opinions has been narrowing, despite millions of dollars invested in a campaign in favor of the FTA.

On October 7, 2.7 million Costa Rican will vote on the future of the trade agreement with the United States.
