Ecuador Workers Stop

8 March 2006

Quito, Mar 8 (Prensa Latina) Ecuadorian laborers kicked off Wednesday a 24hr nationwide work stoppage including roadblocks to reject the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the US and the Executive’s neoliberal policy.

Mesias Tatamues, head of the Ecuadorian General Union of Workers of Classist Organizations (Cedoc-Cut), said Wednesday this protest is a warning message and if it is unanswered there would be fiercer actions.

He warned they are also demanding the expiration of the contract with Oxy US oil company plus the Colombia Plan for being harmful for Ecuadorians.

For Cedoc-Cut, the Worker Unitary Federation and other Ecuadorian unions, the 24-hour work stoppage begins a process to gain rights and national sovereignty.

Workers will demand, as well, a 30 dollar pay increase, criticize labor backwardness and work hours.
