FTA should be done with Taiwan, says Dunne

17 February 2006

A free trade agreement with Taiwan should be pursued as soon as a deal is done with China, United Future leader Peter Dunne said yesterday.

The Revenue Minister made the comments at an event in Auckland to mark the 10th anniversary of the Morning Star company, one of the largest personal computers wholesalers in the country that was started by a Taiwanese businessman.

Taiwan was New Zealand’s eighth biggest trading partner and Mr Dunne said a free trade agreement would be beneficial to both countries.

Mr Dunne is a strong supporter of official recognition of Taiwan.

The Government supports the one China policy, which means it does not recognise Taiwan as an independent state.
