Mexico begins free trade negotiations with Jordan
by Mike Godfrey
Mexico and Jordan held the first round of negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA) in Amman, Jordan, on August 26-27, 2014.
The negotiations follow a meeting between the leaders of the two countries in February this year, during which they expressed interest in promoting greater cooperation in economic, political, and cultural spheres.
The two sides discussed the scope of the agreement, including trade in goods, market access, rules of origin and trade facilitation, trade in services, investment, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, and legal and institutional issues. An FTA between the two nations would be the first trade agreement between Jordan and a Latin American country.
The second round of negotiations is scheduled for October this year.
