Translated by bilaterals.org

The #NoCPTPP hashtag is back on trend overnight, after the Shippers’ Council supported Thailand to participate in CPTPP negotiations to create impetus for the economy.

Reporters reported today on Twitter Thailand, the #NoCPTPP hashtag is back in trend, with more than 600K tweets coming overnight. Kapook.com reported yesterday that this hashtag is ranked number 1 in the top 10 Twitter trends in Thailand.

After the news that Kanyaphak Tantiphiphatphongphong, the Chairman of Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) has proposed that the Bank of Thailand Maintain exchange rate stability from appreciation of over 34 baht per USD in order not to affect exports, accelerate the use of the government budget for investment to create sustainability for the economy and support Thailand to participate in CPTPP negotiations to create impetus for the economy.

FTA Watch continued to present information about the impact with the hashtag #NoCPTPP. This is not the first time that the hashtag are trending on Twitter, when at the end of April to oppose the case of the Cabinet preparing to join the CPTPP as proposed by Somkid Jatusripitak, the Deputy Prime Minister who proposed the matter. Those opposing Thai participation in CPTPP fear it will affect issues such as seed monopolies, food security and access to drugs, impact small and medium businesses of Thailand, as well as limit the State’s public policy space to protect the people. There is also no assessment of the impact on the economy and society after the Covid-19 crisis.
