Presidents Humala and Hollande welcome Peru-EU FTA

Lima, Nov. 15 (ANDINA). Peru’s President Ollanta Humala and his French counterpart Francois Hollande welcomed the forthcoming entry into force of the Multiparty Trade Agreement between Peru and the European Union (EU), and emphasized the strengthening of the historic ties between the two nations.
After the meeting held at the Elysee Palace, both Heads of State highlighted the strengthening of bilateral relations through the continued rapprochement between the European Union and Latin America.
They discussed matters related to cooperation in education, anti-drug operations, water resource management and mitigation of climate change effects.
In a joint statement issued at the end of the presidential meeting, Humala and Hollande underlined the signing of agreements in the education sector, which among other things, will promote student exchange programs.
"We thank the political willingness of President Hollande to work on educational issues through cooperation and the provision of scholarships, so that young Peruvian students can come to France to follow graduate and undergraduate level courses and, in this way, improve their capabilities," stated President Humala.
The president said this visit marks the start of a strengthening process of the historic Franco-Peruvian relations, and he noted that another issue on which France and Peru will work jointly is the fight against drug trafficking.
For his part, French President Hollande accepted an invitation from President Humala to visit Peru in the near future and they both recalled Charles de Gaulle was the last French leader to visit Peruvian soil.
