S. Korea, Peru agree to begin FTA discussions

By Yoo Cheong-mo

SYDNEY, Sept. 9 (Yonhap) — South Korea and Peru on Sunday agreed to launch discussions on forming a bilateral free trade agreement during a summit between South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun and Peruvian President Alan Garcia, Roh’s spokesman said.

"Roh and Garcia met on the sidelines of the APEC forum summit and agreed to push for a bilateral FTA deal and reinforce two-way cooperation in resources, energy, trade and technology, among others," Cheon Ho-seon said in a media briefing.

"The two leaders also shared the view that cooperation between Asia and South America is increasingly important," he said.

South Korea and Peru established diplomatic relations in 1963. South Korea’s grant aid to Peru is expected to reach US$5.2 million this year.

The South American country of Chile and South Korea entered into a free trade agreement in 2004.
