Senate debate begins on Thai FTA deal

18 November 2004

(AAP) Debate has begun in the Senate on laws enabling the Thailand-Australia Free Trade Agreement to take effect from next year.

Two bills passed the House of Representatives on Wednesday and are expected to pass the Senate with Labor support.

The agreement will axe more than half of Thailand’s 5,000 tariffs, accounting for nearly 80 per cent of Australian exports.

It has been estimated to be worth at least $3 billion over the first 20 years of its operation.
