Taiwan president wants economic partnership agreement with Japan

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has expressed hope that Taiwan and Japan will be able to conclude an economic partnership agreement, or EPA.

Lai took part in an event to celebrate the New Year on Thursday. The Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Taipei was among the event’s organizers. The group is comprised of about 500 Japanese companies that do business in Taiwan.

Lai praised industrial collaboration between Taiwan and Japan. He described it as a mutually complementary relationship.

As an example, he cited Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s plant located in the southwestern Japanese prefecture of Kumamoto. TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, began full-scale operations at the plant last month. The facility is the company’s first plant in Japan.

Lai then called on representatives of Japanese companies to urge the Japanese government to sign an EPA with Taiwan as soon as possible.

This is the first time Lai has attended an event organized by Japanese business organizations since he took office. The move underscores his administration’s commitment to strengthening ties with Japan.
