Viet Nam, Japan enter third round of trade negotiations

07-June-2007

TOKYO - The third round of negotiations to draft the Viet Nam-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) opened in Tokyo yesterday.

Japanese chief negotiator Jun Yokota, the foreign ministry’s ambassador for economic and international trade affairs, said his country had gained clearer insight into Viet Nam’s expectations for the EPA thanks to the first two sessions and its proposals made during the second round of talks.

Vietnamese chief negotiator, Deputy Trade Minister Phan The Rue, said although there were still hurdles to overcome, the overall negotiations had entered an important stage with detailed discussion in areas like goods, services, hygiene and technical standards.

Rue said he hoped the two sides would accelerate the pace of negotiations so they could sign the bilateral partnership as quickly as possible. VNS
