Chile to Cite Koreans for FTA Efforts

8 January 2006

The Chilean Embassy in Seoul said that Chile will award the “Decoration of Bernardo O’Higgins” to five Koreans who contributed to the successful free trade agreement (FTA) between South Korea and Chile.

The awardees are Rep. Chung Eui-yong of the ruling Uri Party ; Kim Han-soo, director general of the FTA Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MOFAT) ; Ahn Ho-young, director of general of the MOFAT ; Chong Woo-seong, foreign policy advisor to President Roh Moohyun ; and Korean Ambassador to Ukraine Lee Sung-joo.

It took about one year for the FTA to take into force on April 1, 2004 mainly due to the strong opposition to the pact by the farmers who fear massive imports of Chilean agricultural products.

“The five people really contributed to getting the FTA realized,” Chilean Ambassador to Seoul Adolfo Carafi said.

The award ceremony will be conducted at the ambassador’s residence separately starting Tuesday with Rep. Chung.
