Chinese Premier Wants FTA With S. Korea

by News Staff

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Thursday he will seek to speed up the process for a free trade agreement when he visits South Korea next week.

"China and (South Korea) should come up with a win-win FTA proposal at an early date so as to pave the way for the FTA," Wen told a group of Korean journalists in Beijing, the official Xinhua reported. Wen begins his two-day trip next Tuesday, the first such by a Chinese premier in eight years.

Trade between the two countries has jumped to about $130 billion, or 26 times since they established diplomatic relations in 1992. Wu reminded that the presidents of the two countries have set a trade target of $200 billion by 2012.

Commenting on the unification of the Korean Peninsula, Wen said it can be decided only by the two Koreas and hoped the two will resolve the issue "independently and peacefully."
