Farmers Protest all over Mexico

Mexico, Jan 9 2008 (Prensa Latina) — Farmers from the Mexican states of Durango, Chiapas, and Chihuahua carried out street protests and roadblocks Wednesday in rejection of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

In Chiapas, members of the National Union of Agricultural Workers, the Regional Organization of Coffee Growers, and the Council of Indigenous Representatives rallied in front of the local Congress, and the secretariat of agriculture, while other rural groups blocked roads demanding the end of the elimination of tariffs on US imports.

In the meantime, farmers from the Durango Farm Defense Organization threw corn and beans in front of the headquarters of the local legislative organ, and urged congress people to ask the executive to revise NAFTA.

In Chihuahua, there was a symbolic taking of the petrochemical plant in Camargo city in rejection of the treaty and the high costs of fertilizers and fuels.
