Japan eager to push for FTA with ASEAN
Tokyo, Sept. 1 (VNA) - The Japanese Government on Tuesday gave the go-ahead to start negotiations with ASEAN member countries on a Japan-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Japan will give its proposal to launch negotiations for the FTA at the 2004 ASEAN Economic Ministerial Meeting (AEMM), which is set to open in Jakarta on September 4.
Japan also expects to reach fundamental agreements with ASEAN member nations on this matter despite stalemate between the two sides in terms of the farm produce issue.
Local newspapers reported on Wednesday that at the meeting, Japan will propose a plan to enhance bilateral trade between Japan and ASEAN.
