Ma: better ties with China needed for FTA with the US
23 July 2007
Kuomintang (KMT) presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou says the government should improve ties with China first if Taiwan wants to sign a free trade agreement with the US.
Ma said on Monday that the United States has urged Taiwan several times to improve relations with China. He said this is in the interest of the US government.
Ma made the comments in response to Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Frank Hsieh’s criticism of his economic policy. Ma’s plan is for Taiwan and China to establish a common economic market.
