Official warns DR-CAFTA could displace thousands of local dairy farmers

6 September 2006

Santo Domingo.- Approximately 58 thousand small and medium-size milk cattle owners of 10 or less milk cows, would be displaced from the market as the DR-CAFTA trade accord is implemented with Central America and the United States, according to Agriculture Planning deputy minister.

Rodriguez is also member of the Dominican team that negotiates in Washington the final details of the trade agreement that, according to the more optimistic views, would be implemented as of the beginning of next November.

He cautioned that, in order to protect national production from contingents of imports from the United States and other regions, cattle owners together with authorities are immersed in programs to improve genetic and nutrition levels in pursuit of competitive production levels.
