THE South Australian Government has signed a trade and economic cooperation agreement with China in a bid to grow exports.

Premier Jay Weatherill announced signing of a memorandum of understanding between South Australia and the Chinese government.

It establishes a regular forum for "consultation" between the State Government and Chinese embassy.

Mr Weatherill said it was a "landmark" step in a "deepening" relationship between the economies.

"China’s growing middle class will be a strong source of demand for our premium food and professional services," he said.

"It’s growing urbanization will continue the demand or natural resources.

"Our capacity to fully develop our state will be increasingly dependent on inbound investment from China.

"This agreement will allow for regular discussion about bilateral trade and economic cooperation, major trade projects and investment opportunities."

Mr Weatherill will travel to China next month in an attempt to build relationships with business leaders and investigate new trade opportunities.
