Indo-Russian JSG proposes to boost bilateral trade

12 July 2007

Moscow, July 12 (PTI) : The Indo-Russian Joint Study Group (JSG) has finalised its report proposing a set of recommendations to boost bilateral trade to US$ 10 billion in two years, according to officials.

The JSG co-chaired by the Commerce Secretary, G K Pillai, and president of Kremlin think-tank Centre for Strategic Research (CSR), Mikhail Dmitriyev, at its fourth meeting here on Tuesday completed its mission by finalising the report to be sent to the governments of India and Russia for approval.

The report contains a set of comprehensive recommendations for the governments and business communities of India and Russia evolved by the multi-disciplinary experts of the two countries for the substantial increase in bilateral trade in merchandises, services and flow of mutual investments.

According to Pillai, who signed the protocol of the JSG concluding session on behalf of India a Commerce Secretary-level Joint Task Force (JTF) would be set up by the end of this year when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is scheduled to visit Moscow for summit talks with President Vladimir Putin.

The Indo-Russian JTF will monitor the implementation of the JSG report with the ultimate goal of concluding Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) and Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries when Russia joins the World Trade Organisation.
